The company said the move would support the business’s ambitious growth plans over the coming years, thanks to Hedges’ experience with Little Moons, Proper Snacks and Tyrrells Crisps.

Whatley, who led the company from its days as a start-up, overseeing such milestones as B Corp certification and becoming the first vertical farm to sell branded salad in UK supermarkets with the Fresh Leaf Co range, is set to remain as a shareholder.

Chairman Chris Britton thanked Whately for his achievements. “Over the past six years, Marcus has led our business to become the first vertical farming brand to sell branded salad in mainstream UK supermarkets,” he said. “This achievement has not only been significant for our growth, but it also brings the UK a step closer to delivering more secure and sustainable food chains.”

Britton expressed confidence that Hedges had the experience and capability to lead the company forward. “Over the last 20 years, Mike has built a reputation for results-driven leadership, integrated business development and operational excellence,” he said. “He has a strong focus on customers and a passion for sustainability and will bring a fresh perspective to our strategy. Mike has the experience and capability to lead us into the next phase of our journey.”

GrowUp said it was looking to capitalise on a successful year, which has seen its products stocked in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Spar and Iceland stores. In addition to the Fresh Leaf Co range, the company also offers the Unbeleafable brand, including the award-winning Zesty Baby Leaves product.

On his appointment, Mike Hedges commented: “I am thrilled to join GrowUp at such a pivotal moment for the business. With a £38mn investment recently secured, GrowUp is in a strong position to build on the foundations laid by Marcus and the wider team to transform the UK salad category and become the number one salad brand that everyone reaches for on supermarket shelves”.
