Growers respond to tightened code

In response to the tightening of the Polytunnel Voluntary Code of Practise, Eric Drummond, on behalf of the South Herefordshire Growers Association said on Wednesday: “The South Herefordshire Growers Association members have been involved from the start with the Code. We have always felt that it was the most appropriate way of dealing with the use of polytunnels because it allows the growers, our neighbours and the Council to discuss them using a flexible approach.

“The Review Committee has decided to make some changes in the light of all the comments that they have received and from the use of the Code over the last year and their recommendations have been accepted by the Environment Scrutiny Committee. We believe this is part of the democratic process and we will support the changes.

“We hope that it will help the growers to get on with the business of producing the highest quality British fruit and for our neighbours to feel more confident about our dealings with them.

“We are now working flat out on the farms at the height of the strawberry picking season. Because of these tunnels the public can now enjoy delicious British strawberries for the extended season from May until October.”
