Growers concerned by UK market

Southern hemisphere onion growers are facing problems in providing the UK’s off-peak season.

Supplying the counter-seasonal offer to the UK is expensive and challenging for New Zealand suppliers, who export 170,000t of onions to the UK each year, according to Kevin Wilcox, director of New Zealand carrot exporter AS Wilcox.

“Onions are a commodity in the UK and are priced accordingly,” he said. “The exchange rate means we have to be twice as efficient. And that is the biggest challenge.”

In Chile, the dominance of large exporters is making it difficult for small onion growers, added Pablo Ramirez of Frumerc & Lampa.
