Fruit growers in the Northamptonshire area are being advised to wash or destroy smoke-affected produce following a major fire.

More than 1,000 tonnes of rubber tyres caught fire at a site in Upper Higham and the Food Standards Agency is warning that growers within a 1km radius of he blaze could have been affected by smoke.

While there would be no immediate harmful effects if eaten, the FSA said growers should use their commonsense when deciding what action to take.

A spokesman said: “They should make sure their products are fit for sale. If any deposits do exist, they should decide whether it should be sold or if they should wait for rainfall to wash the crops.”
