Danny Grover will get a Budgens welcome in December

Danny Grover has left Waitrose to join Budgens. After being buyer of a range of fruit at Waitrose, and working for the company for 18 years, Grover will become head of fruit buying at Budgens.

He will begin his new role in December and is therefore unable to comment further on the move at this point in time.

This new “signing” will be seen as a coup by Budgens, which has made no secret of its desire to step up its fresh food offer under senior trading controller for fresh foods, Steve Carter. He said earlier this year that the importance of the fresh food category to Budgens is reflected in the fact that fresh food participation matches that of the major multiples, far outstripping the standard convenience store.

Fresh produce accounts for 11 per cent of Budgens turnover, compared with only two per cent in an average C store. Carter has also voiced his aim of developing fresh food into a “destination category” at Budgens.
