Greenvale AP this week pleaded guilty at Duns Sheriff Court to an offence under Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and was fined £12,000.

The court heard that Greenvale AP had admitted its guilt at the first available opportunity, shown remorse in relation to the incident and had acted quickly and in total co-operation with the Health and Safety Executive to rectify company procedures identified as contributing to the accident.

The incident, in December 2006, occurred when an employee fell down a gap between two conveyor belts whilst accessing potatoes in the production area, injuring his foot and back. The employee made a full recovery before pursuing a course at university. Greenvale said it has invested in plant and has implemented revised operating procedures as a consequence of this accident.

“Greenvale takes its responsibilities with regards to the health, safety and welfare of employees, contractors and visitors extremely seriously,” read a statement. “We invest heavily in both the training of our employees and our plant and equipment to ensure that our operating procedures minimise the possibility of injury or harm coming to any individual associated with the company.”
