Spain's agriculture minister is offering fruit and vegetable growers Ptas 100bn (£376m) as part of an investment plan to improve competitiveness. According to a report in Spanish national daily, El País, the money would be used to modernise glasshouses and tunnels to guarantee the future for Spain's growers in the face of increasing competition from third-country suppliers.

No details are available from the ministry yet, but according to El País, the investment programme will be managed by a working group set up with representatives from the ministry of agriculture and the ministry for science and technology.

The move is likely to be welcomed by the sector which has complained in recent years of ageing greenhouse infrastructure and increasing competition from sources such as Morocco.

It will also help reduce Spain's reliance on overseas research and development into new varieties.
