The skin's thin...

Greenery UK has launched a thin skin cucumber, which will be available in selected Sainsbury’s stores from the end of April.

The variety of cucumber is grown for the marketing organisation by Dutch grower, Robert Bergenhenagouwen. It is also being marketed as a variety which helps to reduce the effect of burping.

It has a subtle aroma and taste, described by Greenery UK as being "refreshing on the palate".

As the name suggests, the cucumbers have a very thin, translucent skin, giving them a mint-green colour. They are smaller in size than the average cucumber and will be available in twin packs. The thin skin eliminates any need to peel the cucumber, which adds a convenience factor for the consumer who has traditionally preferred that option.

Richard Binks, technical manager at Greenery UK, said: "We are always looking for different varieties of fruit and vegetables which we can offer to our customers. There is a real demand from consumers for fruit and vegetables that are a little different from the norm and we are confident that the thin skin cucumbers will meet their tastes."
