Greenery calls for a salad a day

Simon Trewin, of the Greenery UK, urged consumers to try a salad a day in an address at Horticulture in Focus, 2004.

Business unit director Trewin said that with rising levels of obesity becoming an important issue people are becoming more conscious of their diets. He said: “People want to eat more healthily and we want to encourage people to increase their consumption of fresh produce.”

Trewin said that the 5-a-day offer has focused mainly on fruit. Salad is a marketable product. The Greenery UK’s message to the consumer is a simple one - why not try a salad a day. He said: “Consumption of salads is increasing. This is down to many factors. Consumers are more health conscious; they’re better educated, there has also been product innovation. And crucially the price of fresh produce has gone down, while consumers disposable income has risen.”

Trewin pointed out that the salad market has grown by 90 per cent since the start of the decade and that the bagged salad market has grown by 237 per cent in the same period. There has also been an expanding range of produce within the salad offer. He said: “There are so many options of what can go into a salad - tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, spring onions and salad leaves. Salads is continuing to perform well in the produce sector, but more can be achieved.”
