The Greenery UK has reached an “in principle” agreement with John Baarda Ltd to market its glasshouse-grown products.

The move would see John Baarda Ltd market its production through the Huntingdon-based UK arm of the Dutch company.

John Baarda Ltd is one of Britain’s highest-profile glasshouse operators, with its modern facility in Billingham constructed in 2005-06 regarded as “the jewel in the crown”. The state-of-the-art Billingham facility utilises surplus heat and carbon dioxide from neighbouring industry.

Managing director David Baarda said: “This development will allow us to focus on growing and the further development of the nursery at Billingham. It is now about creating a model that would allow the asset to grow towards the original vision.

“Entering into a partnership with a strong industry player like The Greenery is very exciting for the future of our business.”

Kevin Doran, managing director of Greenery UK Ltd, said: “We are delighted to have one of Britain’s pre-eminent producers join The Greenery group of growers. Needless to say, it is a very good strategic fit for our business.”

The agreement has been reached with the support of John Baarda Ltd’s bankers, HSBC plc, which will be providing finance and participating in the refinancing of the company, subject to final agreement, expected later this month.
