Students at the Writtle College Floristry Department participated in an Industry Week to enhance the students’ learning experience and prepare them for the floristry industry.

The Industry Week consisted of a range of workshops, practical sessions and relevant members of industry coming into Writtle College to meet the students and share their experiences, as well as a trip to a London florist, so that the students could gain insight into working on the front line.

The workshops covered a range of topics including wirework, manipulating leaf and plant materials, weaving, plaiting and creating fascinators. The students also had the opportunity to enter a Design and Create a Handbag competition, the winners of which will have their designs reproduced for the prestigious Prima Awards later in 2009.

Representatives from Prima magazine visited the college in order to take part in the workshop and experience the floristry methods that are taught at Writtle College. Several other guests attended the Industry Week, including British floral designer and published floristry author Claire Cowling, and former student Ben Cannell, who was recently featured in Flowers for Funerals magazine.

Writtle College currently run a foundation degree in Professional Floristry which is among the new higher education award titles being offered at the College from the School of Horticulture.
