Ground-breaking: Lowhub's eco-van

Sustainable fresh produce transport pioneer Lowhub has been rewarded for its commitment to new techniques in the shape of a Wandsworth council award.

Lowhub scooped the Green Business Award for Innovation at this year’s Wandsworth council awards at the Clapham Grand last week.

The year-old company has received plaudits for its fleet of vans, which run on electricity or biodiesel cooking oil sourced from local London restaurants while on deliveries.

Michael Grove, Lowhub business development manager, told freshinfo: “It’s fantastic to be recognised, we’re still a young company and it’s definitely a step in the direction we want to go in.

“With the financial crunch I see a great opportunity for sustainable businesses like ours to thrive. Companies will look at it and think whether they should hire three vans at three separate costs or do it with us with one van and be environment-friendly,” he said.

Lowhub started delivering fresh produce around London in September last year and now has a team of four drivers making roughly 15 drops a day on behalf of traders at New Covent Garden and Borough markets.

Grove insisted that the business would continue to innovate in light of their award. “Commercially, you can’t just sit back and wait. You have to keep pioneering. This award could be key to generating more business too,” he said.

Lowhub recently exhibited its groundbreaking delivery van in Covent Garden in October decorated in flowers by students at Barkingside college.
