UK grapefruit consumers have decided that size does matter and bigger is better, according to new research ahead of a promotional push.

A study carried out by the South African Citrus Growers Association (CGA) before this year’s grapefruit season revealed that consumers actively seek out bigger fruit sizes and that some would even rather leave empty handed than with a small grapefruit.

CGA chairman Justin Chadwick (pictured) said smaller fruit should be targeted at the snacking market - dominated by younger consumers - while larger fruit should have a higher, premium price point aimed at the older, breakfast market.

This year’s South African crop is shaping up strongly with one million 15kg equivalent cartons the export target.
