The government is set to go on a charm offensive to counter scare stories surrounding GM crop production, media reports claimed.
The campaign, to be led by John Hutton, the cabinet office minister, has prompted environmental groups to warn against the government “softening up” the media for controversial scientific developments, the Independent reported.
The news follows on from the EU Commission approval for the use of GM maize in animal feed.
Hutton is reported to have been dispatched by prime minister Tony Blair as he fears the country could miss out on economic and social benefits if public hostility to GM products remains.
The minister said he is aiming to persuade media to report sensitive issues, such as GM crops and foods, in a more balanced way.
