Kiwifruit production in Chile is forecast to be down in 2002 compared to last season because of cool temperatures in the southern hemisphere spring, but exports will be broadly similar thanks to enhanced quality. Production is forecast by US authorities in Chile to level off in a few years time as plantings of new vines reach full maturity. Total output is expected to reach 158,000-160,000 tonnes with some 70 per cent of the crop destined for export markets.

The harvest is expected to start as usual at the end of March.
