Rose legend David Austin and VI manager Patrick Goldsworthy were among the entitled at this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Austin received an OBE for services to horticulture, while Goldsworthy was honoured for services to the environment.

Environmental awards were a strong theme this year, with Dr Malcolm Wakerley, technical support and research manager at Defra, picking up an MBE, while Dr James Curran collected for services to the environment and sustainable development in Scotland.

Similarly, Julia Sturrock got an OBE for services to the environment and to sustainable development in Scotland. John McGlone, deputy director of legal services at Defra, was given a knighthood, as was Meurig Rees, former chair of the Royal Welsh Show.

Andrew Humphries was handed an MBE for services to agriculture and to the rural economy in Cumbria. There was even room for the day’s unlikeliest citation, when Douglas Read won an MBE for ‘services to ploughing’.
