The specialist daffodil division of Taylors Bulbs of Holbeach received its 14th consecutive gold metal at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show for its daffodil stand. As the flower show was later than the traditional daffodil flowering time the flowers were grown in controlled conditions; elongating firstly the summer period of dormancy then the cold of winter. At the beginning of May the bulbs are brought into the glasshouse where they grow rapidly.

“This has been the toughest year preparing for a Chelsea Show I can remember for some time and I am as excited about this medal as any other we have won in the past,” said Johnny Walkers of Taylors Bulbs, who leads the team putting together the stands of daffodils. “We have 74 varieties on the stand this year but I was only able to have four reserve varieties of show quality on Monday morning. Toying with nature is always a precarious pastime but I believe the effects of last summer’s high temperature led a lot of varieties to misbehave for this show.”

The Lincolnshire company had also won gold at the Harrogate Spring Show and the RHS Daffodil Show in London this spring.
