The Growing Media Association has formally announced its association with the British Ornamental Plant Producers certification scheme.

The BOPP certification scheme was initially developed for growers, particularly those supplying the retail trade.

However GMA members reportedly felt that the benefits that growers have seen, such as increased customer confidence in their product and a reduction in the audit burden, were transferable to the growing media industry and would increase the industry’s credibility.

The Growing Media Producers’ Standard covers aspects of quality, safety and service that are appropriate for factory operations that may be sourcing raw materials from national or international suppliers.

Once GMA members join BOPP they have 12 months to become certificated, it has been confirmed, and after their first inspection they will be re-inspected each year. Experienced auditors will carry out the inspections through a UKAS accredited certification body.

“Membership of BOPP gives customers the confidence that the product adheres to stringent standards and that the company’s processes and procedures are robust,” explained Catherine Dawson, chair of the GMA. “In addition, the industry’s confidence in BOPP can cut the administrative and financial burden of multiple audits and increase efficiency.”
