German biotech firm BASF has applied for EU approval to grow a new GM potato.

Fortuna has the capacity to “defend itself from late blight disease” and was submitted for use as human food and animal feed.

If it is declared safe for humans, animals and the environment, BASF said it could be introduced as early as 2014 or 2015.

It would be the third GM crop approved in the EU after a Monsanto variety of maize and BASF’s Amflora starch potato
