Canes for new raspberry variety Glen Fyne were launched for members of the Scottish Raspberry Breading Consortium last week.

The move will enable commercial production of the variety, which was bred by Mylnefield Research Services at the Scottish Crop Research Institute, to get underway.

The 12-strong group, which includes Mylnefield Research Services, Angus Soft Fruits, BerryWorld, Redeva, KG Growers and Hargreaves Plants, as well as the Horticultural Development Company and the Scottish government, can now order the canes.

The variety has been trialled in Scotland since 1999.

Nikki Jennings, a fruit breeder at Mylnefield Research Services, told FPJ: “This summer-fruiting variety is a bit earlier than Gen Ample, and we started picking it a week earlier this season. Glen Fyne has better pest and disease resistance, as it is more resistant to aphids and to cane diseases, but it is slightly more susceptible to root rot.

“The variety was originally developed for the processing market, but its flavour and shelf life are so good that it has made the switch to the fresh market.”
