The newly released Glen Doll floricane raspberry from the Scottish Raspberry Breeding Consortium is set to have a promising future, after sales met high expectations.

The new cultivar, with a large and rounded shape similar to Glen Ample, fits into the range of varieties available to UK growers. It offers very high yield potential concentrated in a key window, later than Glen Ample.

Glen Doll can compete with popular variety Tulameen, with yields typically up to 30 per cent higher, and a two per cent Class 1 increase in tests carried out by Hargreaves.

Jamie Petchell, rubus development manager at Hargreaves Plants, said: “We are major financial contributors to this programme, so it is truly satisfying to see such an exciting early release.

“Sales of canes have been fully in line with expectations, as growers see the merits of Glen Doll,” he added. “For this spring, we only have a limited quantity of potted plants. We expect our availability of potted plants to all go before the main 2008 planting deadline.”

Jane Fairlie, technical manager for rubus at Hargreaves Plants, said: “It is probably the best variety I have seen from the Scottish programme. I have had it in my trials for a number of years, and it is so consistently good that growers will be very pleased.

“Glen Doll was a rather challenging variety to produce in my lab, but we mastered the technique and the plant material is fantastic. What we will provide will give raspberry producers a flying start.”
