Glen Avon Growers has laid down the gauntlet to UK salad producers by producing what it believes to be the first UK-grown cucumbers.

The company, which supplies exclusively to English Village Salads (EVS), made its first harvest of Mystica cues on January 28, and the first boxes were sent to JB Brown at Manchester wholesale market.

EVS's product manager Roger Shicluna, pictured left with packhouse manager Colin Rutty, added: 'Proceeds from the first sendings are to be donated by grower David Schellingerhout to Christian Partners in Africa, a charity supporting Ugandan subsistence farmers.' Glen Avon hopes to produce 400,000 boxes of cucumbers by the end of the season, from its eight acres of glass.
