Gerald Glass

Gerald Glass

Gerald Glass, the elder of the brothers who headed Glass Glover Group, one of the UK fruit trade's biggest success stories of the 1970s and 1980s, has died.

His brother Alick said: "It was Gerald's dynamism and innovative talents that changed the face of fresh produce trading north of the border and established the foundations for the Glass Glover organisation."

Following the family's disposal of the publicly quoted business to a management buyout in 1988, and the subsequent acquisition by Fyffes of the group's Scottish wholesale companies, Gerald was recruited to manage these businesses again during a period of integration.

He retired in the late 1990s but until recently maintained his interest in Glass Associates, the Washington Apple importing company and consultancy established by his brother Alick.

Gerald is survived by his wife Sylvia, three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
