German farmers have welcomed the euro but recognised that UK business is suffering outside the single currency.
In a speech to the massive Fruit Logistica showcase in Berlin, German Farmers Association (DBV) president Gerd Sonnleitner said the single currency had reduced the risk of fluctuating earnings and has made for a more stable trade in agricultural exports.
He said it was 'no coincidence' the DBV had been calling for monetary union since the 1960s.
But the agriculture chief told conference to spare a thought for the UK industry, which he said was being damaged by being outside euroland.
He said: 'Negative effects are currently being felt to the full by our colleagues in the profession in the UK, who are not part of the eurozone.' He added that the weakness of the euro last year had helped to boost agricultural exports.
