The German fruit variety consortium, DOSK is strengthening its search for innovative varieties. Founded in 2003, the consortium is an association of nine German fruit co-operatives producing some 500,000 tonnes of fruit a year. DOSK now intends to work more closely with breeders internationally to acquire licences for the production and distribution of new varieties in Germany. Dirk Zabel, head of variety innovation at DOSK said: “We are focusing on apples and pears, but also looking at berries. We will look for progress in the global fruit variety market and promising novelties will be tested under different climatic conditions in Germany. We are looking to pull varieties in, rather than wait to be approached."
