Film manufacturer Alesco is using eco-power to produce a new range compostable biofilms.

The German plastic manufacturer only uses renewable energies made of waterpower for the production of the compostable biofilms.

Alesco pre-bought the volume of power it needs for the production of biofilms in 2008. The eco-power is certified by power company RWE, which also guarantees the energy’s carbon-dioxide-free production.

The company’s guiding principle "From nature, for nature" means that due to the exclusive application of CO2-neutral eco-power in the production of its biofilms, Alesco’s films made of renewable materials are now even more eco-friendly.

"We as a company are responsible for our environment and our descendants.

For this reason we pondered on how to produce our compostable biofilms as resource-protecting as possible,” said Philipp Depiereux, alesco manager.

With the exclusive use of CO2-neutral eco-power during the production of biofilms this approach is consequently pursued when purchasing energy.

"For our biofilm productions in 2008 we have already ensured all the necessary power capacities,” said Karl Heinz Thielen, managing director, purchasing. A continuation in 2009 is planned if the eco-power idea is positively accepted by customers. Beside the compostability of the films, which are certified with the seedling according to standard EN 13432, the use of CO2-neutral eco-power is another sales argument for the eco friendly packaging solutions at the point-of-sale.”

According to the Bundesverband für Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft (Federal

Association of Energy and Water Economy) the part of renewable energies in Germany is about 14 per cent. The designated target of the European Union - 12.5 per cent by 2010 - has already been reached in Germany.
