Geest factory goes up in flames

Night staff at the Geest pizza and pasta factory in Barton-upon-Humber were evacuated when a fire which eventually caused the factory’s collapse started in a packaging warehouse on Sunday night.

It took 100 fire-fighters to bring the blaze under control at the Geest Prepared Foods division site. It destroyed two facilities making pasta and speciality bread at the premises and one other bread making facility on the site is undamaged, but is not manufacturing, company said in a statement.

The two facilities represent less than 10 per cent of Geest’s assets and contribute around six per cent of group turnover, and the firm stated it is insured against losses of this kind.

An investigation by the health and safety executive has now been launched.

Geest hopes to switch production to its Scunthorpe plant.

No one was injured in the blaze.
