Fresh prepared foods company Geest Plc has announced the appointment of Sir John Banham as non-executive chairman, with effect from September 1. His appointment follows the announcement at the company's agm in May that Ian Menzies-Gow, executive chairman, would be retiring.

Sir John (61) is non-executive chairman of Whitbread PLC and ECI Ventures Ltd and has previously held several leading positions in UK industry. He was director general of the CBI from 1987-1992.

He commented: 'Ian will be a hard act to follow. Since he joined the company six years ago, Geest has come a long way in one of the faster growing areas of the food manufacturing sector. Under his chairmanship, Geest has remained focussed, developed its market position primarily through sound organic growth and built a bridgehead on the continent. This is a sound base from which the Group can continue to develop.'
