Garlic consultation period closes

The consultation period for a new EU garlic import regulation closed yesterday, as the EU seeks to implement new measures to deter fraud by June 1.

The draft regulation proposes to maintain certificates of origin and the introduction of a system of import licences. Under the new regulation, traditional and new importers are clearly distinguished, with 70 per cent of the total licence quantity allocation going to traditional importers and 30 per cent to new importers for garlic imported from Argentina, China and other third countries.

The quotas are for 19,147 tonnes of imports from Argentina, 13,200 from China and 6,023t from other third countries.
