Fyffes, the Irish fresh produce produce giant, has entered into a strategic US alliance with Uniban, the main banana export company in Colombia.
Through a 50/50 ownership in Turbana Corporation, the Florida-based marketing subsidiary of Uniban in the US, Fyffes is looking to increase its business presence in the US marketplace.
Uniban exports 23 million cases of bananas a year from Colombia with Fyffes taking 12m to 13m of those. It is reported in the Irish press that Fyffes has invested up to $6m.
Turbana markets in excess of 10m cases of bananas and plantains in the US with annual sales close to $100m.
