Fyffes builds on Edinburgh market site

Fyffes has hatched plans to build 484 homes on an 8.6 acre site that once incorporated Edinburgh Fruitmarket.

The market, an empty ex-Asda store and a factory will make way for a £65 million development by the Irish fresh-produce giant

The project will transform Hutchison Road in Chesser after Fyffes snapped up the site that until the 1970s was a bustling fresh produce market. Many of the activities have since been relocated outside of the Scottish capital.

Fyffes’ scheme includes the building of 70 low-cost flats as part of a drive to provide social housing, with 10 detached houses also proposed.

An outline planning application has been submitted to Edinburgh City Council for the scheme and work is expected to start next year, according to The Scotsman.

Local councillor Andrew Burns said: “I will be sorry to see the fruit market leave the area, but it is not unexpected news for people living in the vicinity.”
