Farming and environment minister Jane Kennedy MP has joined produce industry leaders to back Future of Farming Week.

The first-time event, which kicked off on Monday, has been co-ordinated by Linking Environment and Food (LEAF) to encourage growers to do at least one thing to help secure the long-term future of the UK industry.

Kennedy said: “Farming is an essential occupation that produces wholesome, affordable food and protects our countryside.

“LEAF has done some great work through initiatives such as Speak Out and Open Farm Sunday to promote best farm practice right across the industry. Their efforts... to develop more productive, environment-friendly agriculture are a model to the industry.”

LEAF president Baroness Byford backed this up with her ambition that the scheme will lead to “a more efficient, profitable and well-managed industry, leading to enhanced environmental benefits”.
