FTA anger over government's green policy

The FTA has condemned the government for changing its policy on grants intended to promote environmentally friendly vehicles and fuels.

The reduction in funding for alternative fuelled vehicles and emission reduction technologies have thrown companies environmental strategies into confusion, according to the FTA.

FTA chief economist Simon Chapman said: “The government needs to set an environmental framework which provides clear direction to companies investing in clean fuels and vehicles and provides certainty over cost for the life of the asset. The industry recognises that grant funding for clean technologies cannot be sustained at a set level indefinitely, and that grants are designed to promote uptake until the technology becomes commercially viable without support. But businesses cannot be expected to plan environmental policies with confidence if the goalposts keep moving.”
