The Food Standards Agency has agreed an action plan on the promotion of foods to children which includes the recommendation that retailers market fruit at the checkout and use promotions to encourage children to make or request repeat purchases of healthier foods such as fresh produce.

The action plan is part of government activity to counter obesity in the young and improve the health of the nation.

The agency will work with education departments to improve school meals, publish nutritional criteria for the food industry and best practice on the sign-posting of healthier option foods.

"There is enormous scope for innovation and the positive promotion of healthier choices for children," said FSA chairman Sir John Krebs. "This action plan sets clear targets and timetables for the measures that can start to improve the balance of children’s diets and their health."
