Jaffa Oranges and World Cancer Research Fund’s (WCRF) celebrated this year’s Fruity Friday on May 16, by giving out free oranges to London’s commuters at both Tower Hill and High Street Kensington tube stations from 7.30am.

This year the annual fundraising and awareness-raising event, which is in its fifth year, included 10,000 oranges donated by Jaffa to help get across the message that eating plenty of fruit and vegetables is good for general health.

Scientific research shows it is likely that fruit and vegetables reduce risk of cancer, and this is why WCRF recommends that people eat at least five portions a day.

Paul Fretell of WCRF said: “This is all part of our cancer awareness week and the oranges have gone down very well with the commuters. The oranges each have a Jaffa and a Fruity Friday sticker so you can go a bit further than just eating the orange and find out more about the fund.”

Marius du Plessis, spokesperson for Jaffa, said: “We are very pleased to support Fruity Friday by giving commuters a juicy Jaffa orange to kick start their day. Jaffa oranges, grapefruit and easy peelers are the perfect healthy fruit, containing a good dose of calcium, potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants.”
