Fruit trade veteran Malcolm Campbell has died at the age of 84.
Campbell, who was chairman and managing director of Malcolm Campbell Ltd, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Sunday 8 July.
Educated at Glenalmond College, Campbell went on to study business management at Glasgow University before joining the family retail fruit business in 1955.He was the fourth generation to join the company, which was founded in 1878, and worked his way through various departments to become chairman and managing director in 1968.
Campbell had many friends throughout the UK, Europe and further afield that he made during his time in the fruit business. He was credited with leading the company’s transition from retail into commercial property investment and development, which it is still active in today, and worked in the business for 41 years before retiring in 1996.
He was chairman of the University Court of Glasgow Caledonian University and awarded an honorary degree by the same university.
A liveryman with the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers for 40 years, Campbell was also a keen yachtsman and golfer, and past captain of Western Gailes Golf Club and a member of the R&A.
A celebration of his life will be held at Houston and Killellan Kirk at 2pm on Monday 16 July with refreshments served afterwards at the River Inn in Houston.
