According to Associated Press in the US, a Norfolk-based fruit distributor is recalling packages of fruit from supermarkets and military commissaries in Virginia and North Carolina.
Krisp-Pak Company ordered the recall after US Army food inspectors reported that one package had tested positive for a potentially fatal bacteria.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly or people with weak immune systems. It also can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Krisp-Pak owner Paul Battaglia is reported as saying the package was produced on October 18 and that no illnesses have been reported.
The fruit, labelled "Krisp-pak Mix Fruit", had not reached retail stores before the recall. never made it to store shelves. It will be destroyed tomorrow.
