Ecuadorian exporter Exporganic SA is hoping to capitalise on the perceived health and environmental benefits of organic food by branding its bananas Friendly.

Exporganic began shipping the organic bananas last month to northern and central Europe, with plans to expand soon to the US and other markets.

The company’s Jimmy Teran said it offers year-round supply of the superior tasting fruit.

“The quality and taste of Ecuadorian organic bananas is outstanding, and the peace of mind given by the fact of knowing that no harmful chemicals are used in their production, is a definite plus,” he added.

Exporganic is also selling Friendly-branded plantains, “plátano macho” in Spain, and is hoping to supply these to the US along with organic baby bananas, pineapples, mangoes, and other organic and conventional produce.

The company markets its own fruit, as well as that of several neighbouring co-operatives of certified organic farmers, with the objective of providing sustainable business opportunities to small farmers throughout the country.

Exporganic and most of its associated farmers are certified organic by Ceres gmbh of Germany.

Most of the farms are also working towards achieving EurepGAP certification within the next couple of months.
