Freshgro takes kids on carrot adventure

Primary school children received an education in the nutritional benefits of carrots last week after a visit to Freshgro Farm.

Thirty-two children from Sturton le Steeple Primary School in Bilsthorpe visited a local farm, owned by chairman of the British Carrot Growers’ Association Martin Evans.

They were given a tour of the factory and packhouse to see how the British carrot made its journey from field to fork.

Evans was keen to support an ongoing media campaign, which this year focuses on children and nutrition. “Today’s children are the carrot consumers of the future and it is our job to make sure that the UK’s favourite vegetable stays that way for generations to come,” he said.

Head teacher Vera Ballinger is keen to promote healthy lifestyles and eating habits. “It was a real learning experience for the children to see what full scale production looks like,” she said.

The educational programme will continue into autumn with a Carrot Carnival for children in Lincolnshire.

“Carrots are incredibly popular with children,” said Evans. “They tell us it’s because they are sweet and crunchy and, encouragingly, they know that they’re a healthy choice. We have a great product which is nutritious, colourful and convenient and we're proud to be telling our children about it."

The BCGA has also created a new website - www.carrots4kids.co.uk - where children can download facts and follow the story of a carrot superhero, Captain Carrot.
