Swithenbank Foods, the specialist fresh and chilled division of leading UK foodservice wholesale distributor 3663 First for Foodservice, opened a fresh produce depot just north of London, in Enfield, this week.
The 20,000 sq ft site, which includes a £130,000 refrigeration plant, a chilled marshalling area and a ripening room, is the company’s first site dedicated to the distribution of fresh produce in and around the M25.
The new facility will enable Swithenbank to carry out daily deliveries.
Andrew Watson, director of Swithenbank Foods, said: “A London-based depot will enable us to save the company an estimated 500,000 food miles a year, which is a significant environmental saving.
“Our customers include major hotel chains, private healthcare establishments and staff restaurants situated the length and breadth of the country.
“By having depots in both the Midlands and the south, we will be able to deliver even fresher produce even more quickly than before.”
