Newling: New ways to cook potatoes

The Potato Council has recruited a new team of growers to represent its ‘Potato Ambassadors’ scheme.

The initiative, set up two years ago to inspire the nation to eat more potatoes, has delivered more than £1.2 million worth of media coverage to date.

The 10 new recruits include growers nationwide who have been successful in supplying retailers, restaraunts and customers through their own independent farm shops.

New recruit Mike Newling is director of a Cambridgeshire-based family farm and his late grandfather was one of the first growers of Maris Piper variety. Newling said: “Since becoming an Ambassador I have been trying new ways of cooking potatoes to show how versatile and tasty they can be. Sharing this sort of message helps the whole industry and will potentially drive up consumer demand for potatoes.”

Corporate affairs manager for Potato Council, Maria Ball, added: “The new ambasssadors are enthusiastic about our marketing activity, will encourage other growers to promote potatoes and be a key part of our consumer facing campaigns.

Since their introduction in 2010 the Potato Ambassadors have resonated with consumers and the media, reaching an audience of 19 million, which demonstrates that the people at the heart of the industry are best placed to showcase why potatoes should be a regular choice for every shopper."

The full team for 2012-14 is: Reuben Collins, Nigel Raymond, Matt Spanton, Angela Cliffe, Kevin Stokes, Newling, Amanda Cornforth, Mark Robson, Robin Cropper and Peter Grewar.
