Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc has bought two Costa Rican fruit producers and an affiliated sales and marketing business in a deal worth $403 million (£204.6m).
Banana producer Desarollo Agroindustrial de Frutales SA and gold pineapple grower Frutas de Exportacion SA are together known as Caribana.
Fresh Del Monte said it expects the additions to increase its earnings in the first year, and boost its volumes of Del Monte-branded banana and Del Monte Gold Extra Sweet pineapple.
Caribana’s packing and production facilities are located near Fresh Del Monte’s existing Costa Rican operations. The acquisition increases the firm’s land holdings in the Central American country to 13,000 hectares.
