Fruit and vegetable growers in southern France are calling for fresh protests in response to falling prices following action which saw lorries tipped over.

Growers are demanding that the government implement a rescue plan for the sector which, according to them “is dying amid general indifference”.

“Prices are collapsing and we have an unprecedented crisis on our hands, said an official of farmers union, FDSEA, going on to warn of “an economic and social catastrophe in France’s agricultural areas.”

On Tuesday, action by a group of farmers in the Gard area, saw Spanish produce transported by lorries intercepted at a toll gate on the A9 motorway and tipped on to the road. A Lidl distribution hub was also targeted.

Last month, French growers intercepted trucks from Spain tipping their cargos of peaches outside the Spanish consulate in Perpignan.

In the Bouches-du-Rhône department, which includes Marseille, farmers unions will meet later this week to decide whether to join their counterparts in the Gard and the Vaucluse in taking action.
