Residents in the Andalusian town of Vellez, in Malaga, got an unexpected fruity treat yesterday when a truck driver distributed his load of tomatoes and melons somewhat earlier than programmed.
Caught up in the fuel protests and unable to move his vehicle, the driver apparently decided enough was enough, and that the fruit would perish before it reached its designated destination.
So, he opened up the truck and threw the fruit to a welcoming crowd. "He gave it all away for free." A local told Sky News Online. "The melons and tomatoes were flying through the air. I've never seen anything like it."
The protests are having a significant impact on Spanish retailers, with many reporting empty shelves. The impact on the UK is about to kick in, and protests in other parts of Europe are set to exacerbate the problem.
