French President Nicolas Sarkozy has announced that he will veto any accord coming out of current World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations if it threatened the interests of French farmers.
Addressing a group of farmers in the northern town of Saint-Pierre Le Viger, Sarkozy said ‘everyone must make an effort’ in the WTO negotiations.
"At the moment, I don't see that the United States is disposed to make such an effort," he added, also implicating India and Brazil.
"If that is not understood at the WTO negotiations table, France will impose its veto," Sarkozy said. "I am totally determined to defend agriculture as an element of the economic strength of our country."
The threat by Sarkozy to use a veto in order to maintain French subsidies will do little to ease the current crisis.
