English apple grower and processor Fourayes Farm is calling on food manufacturers to increase their commitment to buying British by sourcing Bramley for their apple products.

“Politicians have been putting their weight behind the issue recently,” said Fourayes md Phil Acock. “By embracing food patriotism the manufacturing industry can play an important role in supporting the farming industry over the long term.”

Acock, pictured, attributes the survival of his firm in difficult market conditions to the consistent support of its customers as well as its own forward-thinking practices.

“Farming is an important part of our heritage but also our future,” he said.

“The industry has suffered from overseas competition as increasingly we see cheaper goods being imported from abroad for general consumption.

“Backing from the food manufacturing industry is vital in the fight to revive British farming.

“We are extremely grateful for the support shown to us by our customers over the years and would urge manufacturers to continue supporting the farming industry as a whole by buying British this year.”

Fourayes is the only remaining combined English apple grower and processor. Much of the Bramley crop for processing is grown in Northern Ireland.
