Hewitt has accepted the advice of the Office of Fair Trading as there is a 'significant' prospect that the Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda bids may result in substantial lessening of competition. She also concluded that there are reasonable grounds for believing that there would be the same outcome in the case of Morrison's.

The only bid not to be referred is that of Philip Green's investment vehicle Trackdean Ltd.

The Competition Commission will make its report by August 12.
