The former chief executive at Ahold Cees van der Hoeven, who quit in February following the e1 billion accounting scandal, has filed for compensation.

An Ahold spokesman said: “Cees van der Hoeven has initiated an arbitration proceeding relative to the termination of his employment.”

The company said it would it not comment on the arbitration until a final award had been made.”

Van der Hoeven resigned from the company after it admitted to overstating its profits by e1 billion. In October he said he did feel responsible but not guilty over the irregularities. “I can look myself straight in the mirror, and that is the most important thing,” he said.

Van der Hoeven worked for Ahold for 15 years, joining as chief financial officer and becoming chief executive in 1993.
