New food safety guidance has just been published for the fresh produce industry.

Global Standard for Food Safety: Guideline for Category 5 Fresh Produce, was produced by the British Retail Consortium and the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) in association with NSF-CMi Certification.

The guideline aims to explain the practical requirements of the Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 5 and ensure consistent interpretation by those involved in certification. The guideline relates to products which come under Category 5: unprepared fruit, vegetables and nuts stored under chilled and ambient conditions, and focuses on subjects relevant to these categories. The guidance should be read with the Global Standard for Food Safety and the Interpretation Guideline, also available from the BRC.

Nigel Jenney, ceo of the FPC, said: “This guideline aims to offer practical support to fresh produce businesses to develop robust procedures which will help them meet the requirements for the Global Standard for Food Safety whilst ensuring consistent interpretation by all involved in the process of certification. We welcome feedback from the fresh produce industry as it uses this guideline.”

The publication marks the first sector-tailored guidance produced for the Global Standard for Food Safety. It can be purchased either as a paperback copy (price £40.00) or a downloadable pdf (£37.50 plus VAT) from The Stationery Office (TSO).
