Florida citrus growers have been bracing themselves for frost as temperatures in many parts of the state hit freezing last night ,although not for a prolonged period.

Orange and easy-peel fruit is likely to have been at most risk as it grows in the centre of the state where temperatures were lower than the more coastal regions, which produce grapefruit.

Suppliers have said they will be in a better position to assess any impact on their grapefruit export crops after the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Citrus reports that most growers in the state are well equipped with sprinkler systems to spray water on trees and fruit to keep them from freezing.
